View Full Version : can i use brake fluid to top up power steering on audi a3 1.8t? PAUL R 10-28-2008, 07:40 PM if so what type Miss Terry 10-28-2008, 08:05 PM no you cant must be atf automatic transmission fluid stuartalan w 10-28-2008, 08:05 PM certainly not and don t even use atf fluid go to audi this should be a mineral oil, usually green in colour and has a different viscosity too atf yfz450chuck 10-28-2008, 08:05 PM no, on audi and VW you can not use automatic transmission fluid ether, actualy you cant even use regular power steering fluid, it will burn up your pump in a hurry, you have to get special audi/vw minneral power steering fluid, carl r 10-28-2008, 08:05 PM no - it will damage the rubber seals - only use correct fluid and it dont cost that much ?? mick 10-28-2008, 08:07 PM no use the Audi spec you can cause a lot of damage by using the wrong fluid. D McC 10-28-2008, 08:08 PM NO dont use brake fluid, you use atm fluid (automatic transmission fluid) actually, sounds strange but that is what you use Falcon 10-28-2008, 08:08 PM It must be Automatic Transmission Fluid otherwise you can say bye bye to all your power steering oil seals. As for what type, I would consult the dealer or the car's handbook so that you will use the one suggested by the manufacturer. me2 10-28-2008, 08:09 PM i wouldn't as it has a different grade than brake/clutch fluid which is hydraulic, and it would sit on top of the transmission oil and look like sour milk after a short while. transmission oil isn't expensive, but ask your self why do i need to top it up, is there a visible leak if so get it check out or it could lead in a number of problems that cost more money, anyway good luck douglas w 10-28-2008, 08:09 PM do not use brake fluid to top up power steering as it will eat all the seals mugsy 10-28-2008, 08:09 PM I hope u haven't put the brake fluid in yet????? ONLY USE AND NEVER USE OIL OTHER THEN WHAT IS RECOMENED BY THE DEALER OR AUTO PARTS STORE/DEPT. |
